There is a technology known as Van Eck phreaking which allows a person to see what is on TVs, computer monitors, etc. Anything with a CRT and LCD monitors are vulnerable too. You can make your own Van Eck phreaking device, called an EckBox very cheaply. How an eck box works is that it uses an AM radio receiver to pick up the electromagnetic radiation that leaks from all monitors and TVs and converts it into audio signals. These audio signals are fed into your computer running the eckbox software and converts the audio signals back into video. If done right it is possible to pick up signals from up to 5 kilometers away but I expect that an average device only works up to a few blocks away. The eckbox project can be found at http://eckbox.sourceforge.net/ and if you want to know more just google Van Eck Phreaking or TEMPEST.
Now on to fucking with wiretaps. Most if not ALL wiretaps used in the US rely on two C tones played at the right frequency while your phone is on the hook. This is so that it does not record hours upon hours of dial tone. When you pick your phone up off of the receiver the c tones stop and the device begins to record. If you would play a loop of these c tones during a conversation in the background (it doesn’t have to be loud just loud enough to be heard on the phone line) the wiretap will think your phone is still on the hook. Another fun thing you can do is create false calls by playing the ctone, calling someone, turn the ctone off and dial another number. They will now believe you have called a number that you haven’t really called. If you want a clip of the mp3 and some links that prove this works check out: http://www.jetcityorange.com/wiretap-C-tone/
Right now I am building a Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation device which delivers up to 800 microamperes of electricity to your brain through electrodes placed behind the ears. It has a long history of safe use, in fact there really isn’t anything bad that it does. CES has been proven to increase endorphins and raise levels of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. A feeling of euphoria and lightness can be expected after using CES. It is approved for use in depression, anxiety, insomnia, and even drug addiction. There are studies that show using CES can be effective for some people who are withdrawaling from narcotics. It is also said to potentiate drugs which work on the CNS, so I believe this could be a new tool for potentiating opiates and perhaps for getting off of opiates. If you want to read more about CES check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cranial_electrotherapy_stimulation and if you want to build your own CES device check out http://www.redcircuits.com/Page19.htm
Right now I’m kind of sick, having trouble getting to sleep and since my fentanyl patch wore off two days ago all I’ve had to hold me over till tomorrow is 200mg of propoxyphene, but at least I feel good enough to type. Maybe tomorrow I’ll write a decent entry.

Sorry, but you’ve got pure urban legend there for your wire tapping story. When In Band Signalling was still in use (1970s and earlier for most of the USA), this had some limited factual basis, but thats long gone.
Today, wiretaps are done through the CALEA Interface at the CO Switch. This interface is required as part of the CALEA Statute (google is your friend).
The Van Eck stuf is *years* and years and years old, but still somewhat valid. At least in theory – it may not work, but thats cause the gear it’s “reading” is different (fewer emissions/different frequencies). There is more TEMPEST work which has been done since this early material though: any attempt to use the link you cite in the real world is doomed to failure (unless you’re using *really* old equipment!).
Yeah, I did this for a living, before I could fail a urine test :-/

I’m sorry but you should seriously check out the research that was done at the University of Pennsylvania in 2005; they published a paper called Signaling Vulnerabilities in Wiretapping http://www.crypto.com/papers/wiretapping/ and you may want to check out this article called Security Flaw Allows Wiretaps to Be Evaded from the NY times http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/30/national/30tap.html?ex=1185076800&en=e20535d76ddeae48&ei=5070 and the article How To Fool A Wiretap from Slate http://www.slate.com/id/2135490/ . There is no guarantee that this will work in all situations but you have a good chance of fooling local police, state police, possibly even the FBI and DEA, however, I’m sure the NSA and CIA use much more advanced techniques. the fact is in many wiretapping systems in the United States still to this day use the old C-tone systems and even many J-STD-025A CALEA interfaces still use the c tone technology and are also vulnerable, the U of PA article discusses this. of course listening in on cell phones is quite a different thing, although it was much easier to listen to cell phone communications that were analog.
you are correct that Van Eck is old, it was proven by an American scientist in the late 70s although Wim Van Eck got most of the credit from his work on proving the concept in the 80s. I have seen eck boxes at work in person. not every device is as good as other devices, some can only recreate the images in black and white and/or a little fuzzy while others can show a crystal clear picture in full color. I guess it all depends how well you make it and how good your software is, not to mention your ability to tune in on and filter out the signal. there are other TEMPEST “vulnerability testing” programs that are a little older than the eck box software I linked. of course military computers must meet TEMPEST as well as other ridiculous measures to prevent leaking. Van Eck phreaking is absolutely still valid today as it ever was. I’ve seen it work in person, I’ve seen video of a Dutch anti-electronic voting machine group do Van Eck phreaking on voting machines, and I have friends who saw a demo of Van Eck phreaking at DEFCON years back. it worked then and it still works now. in fact here is a link that shows how LCDs are vulnerable to Van Eck phreaking http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/04/20/2048258. the intelligence communities heavily use Van Eck phreaking and I’m sure some of the stuff they use is way beyond this technology. nothing is truly secure, well unless your in a faraday cage and/or wrapped in lead lol.

you have less chance today of fooling wiretap systems with the ctone technique but you still at least have a chance. here is some relevant info from the University of Pennsylvania’s paper Signaling Vulnerabilities in Wiretapping:
We found exploitable vulnerabilities present in virtually all analog “loop extender” wiretap systems and in at least some systems based on the newer J-STD-025A CALEA interfaces. The vulnerabilities arise from the use of unsecured “in-band” signals that can be spoofed or manipulated by an interception target via his or her own telephone line.
Virtually all conventional analog loop extender interception systems appear to be vulnerable to this countermeasure. CALEA systems that implement backward compatibility features requested by the Justice Department in 1999 are vulnerable as well.
Some CALEA systems, on the other hand, may be able to be made more robust against these countermeasures with relatively modest configuration changes. In particular, CALEA equipment that processes call audio may have features that control recording via in-band C-tone (sometimes called “continuity tone”) signals on “Call Content Channel” (CCC) audio streams. These features should be disabled. Instead, these systems should be configured to rely exclusively on “Call Data Channel” (CDC) messages to determine when recording commences and stops. Telephone companies and law enforcement agencies should confirm the configuration and behavior of their CALEA delivery and collection systems with their vendors.
Wiretap evidence, whether collected by loop extender or CALEA systems, should be evaluated for signs of signaling countermeasures. In particular, records of dialed numbers and call times should be examined for discrepancies against telephone company call detail records. This reconciliation should be performed routinely and as soon as possible after the records become available.
We strongly urge that J-STD-025A and other interception standards and practices be evaluated critically against countermeasures such as those described in our paper and, more generally, against a broad threat model. Our analysis was by design limited in scope, with no attempt made to be comprehensive or exhaustive, and yet easily exploitable weaknesses were quickly found. It appears that a systematic search for vulnerabilities under a threat model that includes subject-initiated countermeasures was not a part of the development process for either the J-STD-025A standard or many of the systems that implement it. We suggest that the law enforcement community develop and articulate security and assurance requirements for interception systems, against which existing and future standards and technologies can be measured.

Hope you get “well” soon PG.
August 14, 2007 at 7:59 pm |
Um, I hope you arent using electroshock therapy..
August 15, 2007 at 7:43 pm |
no ECT (electoshock) is much different, this thing doesn’t hurt at all it is using MICROamperes. the minimum to induce cardiac arrest is 6 milliamps (6,000 microamperes) across the heart though I’ve read it can be up to as high as 20ma’s to fry yourself, either way I’m playing with something MUCH less powerful. the most I’m using in the one I’ve made is 600 microamperes (.6 milliamps) but I may make one or mod a TENS unit to get one up to maybe 1-2 milliamps.

het paregoric kid, interesting reading, like most of youre stuff.why you not write any more?
August 28, 2007 at 7:26 pm |
Hey PK, thanks for your frank response.
I don’t think Im an addict yet, But I am keeping my eyes open.
August 28, 2007 at 7:34 pm |
Sorry about the double post PK.
I have managed to get one hundred nurofen plus pills (Yes I am in the united kingdom). These pills contain 12.5mg codeine and 200mg of iboprofuen. I have been eating up to twelve of these without any bad side effects apart from a little nausea. Do you know of any way to remove the ibuprofen, kinda like cold water extraction? I don’t want to snuff it for the sake of a good codeine hit.

Hey PK , how awful am I? A triple post? what a fucker! Anyways, be careful with this brain electronics stuff. Double and triple check your sources. Do not let electricity kill you! If it works, great. Personally I reckon its a placebo. Good night and good luck my firend.

how depressing… i know an area of london where a lot of houses are disused embassies… they say these buildings are riddled with ancient recording and transmitting devices too…
having said that those houses cost about £6million each these days so i don’t know what I’m worried about haha!

Hey, I’ve read your stuff on here a few times starting like a year ago and really like your writing. You’re a standout junkie. Reading your stuff, I learned a thing or two, reviewed a thing or two and was entertained the whole time. So, I thought I would share this info just in case you wanted it, or didn’t know. Essentially, it’s this: grapefruit(juice or fruit) and echinacea(supplament capsule) enhance your methadone experience by supressing the production of an enzyme in the liver that is used to metabolize the methadone. I dont know the name of the enzyme but can get it for you. Since half your dose(literally 50%) is filtered out by the liver before it even touches your brain, when taken orally, temporarily suppressing this enzyme allows you to get more methadone to your brain and keep it there longer. Now the information about the enzyme being suppressed by echinacea and grapefruit juice is 100% accurate. It comes from mallinckdrodt(sp.) book. However if it works quickly or builds up over time, im not sure. I think it does make me get higher when i drink 2 glasses of 100%pure fresh squeezed grapefruit juice and 3 echinacea pills but I could be imagining it. Anyway, there it is. Hope you have some use for it.

CES has been in the media recently, (UK) as a “new” way to withdraw from drugs, I’ve been looking into it recently but am just getting started- did you ever experiment with it?
